Don’t ignore the signs in your mouth. With AK Diagnostics, early detection of mouth cancer can make all the difference.

Overview

Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth or throat. It can occur on the lips, tongue, gums, inner lining of the cheeks, roof of the mouth, or floor of the mouth. Early detection and treatment are essential for a better chance of recovery.

At AK Diagnostics, we are committed to providing accurate and timely diagnostic services to help identify mouth cancer at the earliest possible stage.

What is Mouth Cancer?

Mouth cancer, also called oral cancer, is a type of head and neck cancer that develops when cells in the mouth begin to grow and multiply in an abnormal, uncontrolled way. Normally, our body’s cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly process. But in cancer, this natural cycle is disrupted — cells produce when they shouldn’t and do not die when they should, forming a lump or mass called a tumour.

In mouth cancer, these malignant (cancerous) cells can occur in different parts of the oral cavity, such as:

  • Lips
  • Tongue (especially the sides and underside)
  • Gums
  • Inner cheeks
  • Roof of the mouth (hard palate)
  • Floor of the mouth (beneath the tongue)

If mouth cancer is not detected and treated early, it can spread deeper into the surrounding tissues, such as the jawbone or throat, and may travel to lymph nodes or other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. This process is called metastasis, and it often makes treatment more complex and outcomes less favourable.

The good news is that when mouth cancer is caught in its early stages — often through routine oral screenings or prompt evaluation of persistent symptoms — treatment is far more effective. That’s why awareness, regular dental check-ups, and timely medical consultation are key to saving lives.

Common Symptoms of Mouth Cancer

Recognising symptoms early can save lives. Common signs include:

  • Persistent mouth sores that do not heal
  • Lumps or thick patches in the mouth
  • Red or white patches on the tongue or inside the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw
  • Persistent sore throat or hoarseness
  • Numbness in the lips or tongue
  • Unexplained bleeding in the mouth

If you experience any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, consult a doctor immediately.

Causes & Risk Factors

Certain lifestyle habits and conditions can increase the risk of developing mouth cancer:

  • Tobacco use (smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection
  • Prolonged sun exposure (especially for lip cancer)
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Family history of cancer

Diagnosis of Mouth Cancer

At AK Diagnostics, our experts use advanced diagnostic methods to detect oral cancer, including:

  1. Physical Examination — Checking the mouth, throat, and neck for lumps or sores.
  2. Biopsy — Removing a small tissue sample for laboratory testing.
  3. FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) — For swelling or lymph node involvement.

Early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment success rates.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the cancer stage, size, and location. Common methods include:

  • Surgery — To remove the tumour.
  • Radiation therapy — Using high-energy rays to kill cancer cells.
  • Chemotherapy — Medicines to destroy or stop the growth of cancer cells.
  • Targeted therapy — Drugs that target specific cancer cell growth mechanisms.

Prevention Tips

You can lower your risk of mouth cancer by:

  • Avoiding tobacco in all forms
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Using sunscreen lip balm when exposed to the sun
  • Scheduling regular dental checkups

Understanding Obesity: Causes, Risks, and the Role of Diagnostic Testing

Overview Obesity is no longer just a lifestyle concern — it is a serious health condition that affects millions worldwide. In India, the number of people struggling with obesity is steadily increasing, cutting across all age groups. More than excess body weight, obesity is linked to various health complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver issues, and even certain cancers. Early detection and preventive care can make a big difference, and that’s where diagnostic testing plays a vital role. At AK Diagnostics , we help patients take control of their health by offering reliable PathLab tests that identify underlying risk factors and monitor the impact of obesity on vital organs. What is Obesity? Obesity is a condition where excess fat accumulates in the body, usually measured by Body Mass Index (BMI) . A BMI of 25–29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or above is classified as obese. However, BMI alone doesn’t always reveal the whole picture....

Understanding the PAP Test: Your First Step in Cervical Health

OVERVIEW When it comes to women’s health, early detection can make all the difference. One of the most effective screening tests for cervical cancer is the PAP Test , also known as the Papanicolaou Test . At AK Diagnostics , we prioritise preventive care, helping women take control of their health through accurate and reliable diagnostic testing. WHAT IS A PAP TEST? A PAP Test is a simple, painless screening procedure that helps detect abnormal cells in the cervix — the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. These cell changes may develop into cervical cancer if not identified and treated early. The test can also reveal infections or inflammation that need medical attention. This test is named after Dr George Papanicolaou, the scientist who first discovered its importance in detecting cervical cancer and other abnormalities. WHY IS THE PAP TEST IMPORTANT? Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it continues to affect thousands of women every year....

Body Swelling – Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis
